Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
It is our pleasure to announce a new Special Issue of Sustainability entitled “Sustainable Civil Engineering: Sustainable Performance Evaluation of Construction Automation Process”.
This Special Issue aims to share recent research related to the automation of sustainable construction production and management processes, which are at the forefront of innovations in construction technology.
Since the early 2010s, research and development have focused on fostering technological innovation through the integration and convergence of various technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), big data, blockchain, robotics, 3D printing, and biotechnology, in order to advance the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The Fourth Industrial Revolution aims to leverage these rapid advancements to enhance the quality of human life, achieve sustainable development, and build an efficient economic structure.
The construction industry is one of the most resource-intensive sectors, significantly influencing energy consumption, carbon emissions, and resource utilization. With the growing demand for sustainable development, construction automation has emerged as a key solution to improve efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and advance sustainability within the industry. Furthermore, ESG management has recently become a priority in addressing climate change and achieving carbon neutrality.
Researchers in the construction industry have endevoured to innovate construction and management technologies by integrating advanced ICT tools such as BIM, 3D laser scanning, IoT, drones, 3D printing, construction robots, AI/big data, VR/AR, digital twin, and OSC.
This Special Issue will contribute to the development of this field by presenting and sharing research and achievements in sustainable construction technologies integrated with ICT.
We welcome the submission of original research articles and critical reviews whose scope includes, but is not limited to, the following topics:
- The development of sustainable construction automation technologies;
- Sustainability assessment of construction automation technologies;
- Interdisciplinary research on construction engineering, sustainability, automation and robotics, and economics to address multi-faceted challenges;
- Innovative methodologies for sustainability assessment, including digital tools like BIM and AI-based simulation models;
- Performance metrics to evaluate the sustainability of construction automation processes;
- Policies and regulations to promote sustainable construction automation.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
