Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Climate change is one of the top challenges facing the world, with significant implications for the travel and tourism systems across the world. The travel and tourism industry is particularly vulnerable to climate-change-attributed extreme weather events such as extreme drought, rising sea levels, storm surges, intense rainfall activity, flooding, extreme heat and sandstorms, amongst others. On the other hand, tourism, hospitality and aviation contribute a significant amount of greenhouse gas emissions throughout their value chain. This dual relationship requires us to rethink how travel, aviation and hospitality are planned, managed and governed in the era of climate change.
Sustainable tourism planning provides a critical entry point for aligning tourism development with climate change adaptation and resilient objectives. Regardless of growing scholarly attention, significant gains remain in translating climate knowledge into spatial planning, policy design, destination governance and community-level action especially in climate vulnerable regions and the Global South.
This Special Issue is set to advance interdisciplinary, empirically grounded and policy relevant scholarship that interrogates how sustainable tourism planning can respond effectively to climate change across different ecological contexts.
This SI is a platform for the examination of climate change impacts risks and transitions. Contributors are invited to explore planning frameworks, governance mechanisms, spatial strategies, and decision making tools which enhance climate resiliency while promoting environmental integrity, social equity, and economic viability in tourism systems.
