Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

In an era where sustainability has become a guiding principle for environmental planning and development, noise pollution stands as a growing yet often overlooked challenge. From transportation networks and industrial operations to urban sprawl and recreational activities, noise affects public health, ecosystem integrity, and social well-being. Despite its wide-reaching implications, noise pollution is still insufficiently integrated into broader sustainability agendas.

This Special Issue seeks to bring noise pollution into sharper focus within the discourse of sustainable development, encouraging novel research and practical insights that bridge environmental assessment methodologies with sustainability-oriented solutions.

We invite interdisciplinary contributions that explore the assessment, monitoring, mitigation, and governance of environmental noise in alignment with sustainability principles, including the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

We welcome original research articles, reviews, case studies, and methodological papers that address, but are not limited to, the following themes:

  • Noise Pollution and the SDGs: Integrating noise indicators into sustainability reporting frameworks;
  • Sustainable Urban Planning: Designing cities and infrastructure with noise resilience in mind;
  • Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of Noise: Tools, innovations, and best practices;
  • Green and Quiet Infrastructure: Nature-based and engineered solutions for noise reduction;
  • Transportation and Industrial Noise: Sustainable mobility and low-noise technology pathways;
  • Noise and Public Health: Assessing long-term exposure effects and socio-spatial disparities;
  • Noise in Natural and Protected Areas: Impacts on biodiversity and conservation strategies;
  • Environmental Justice: Equitable distribution of noise exposure across communities;
  • Policy and Governance: Regulatory frameworks promoting sustainable noise management;
  • Digital Tools and Smart Technologies: Innovations in noise mapping and real-time monitoring;
  • Community Engagement: Participatory approaches to noise mitigation and awareness.

We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
