Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue presents and promotes scattered cultural heritage and contemporary artistic production related to historical and contemporary travel experiences in Europe. Modern travellers seek places with added value, such as points of interest and natural, cultural and historical monuments; thus, our objective is to connect international professionals in cultural, heritage, tourist, educational sectors and academia. The aim is to spotlight new approaches and best practices for engaging the public through GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums) collections, which can be used in the context of cultural tourist routes.

This Special Issue will focus on several broad sub-themes, including:

  • Cultural tourism: best practices for engaging the public through cultural heritage, revealing heritage to modern travellers and its cultural interpretation;
  • Storytelling routes of cultural heritage;
  • GLAM collections: reuse, promotion and revitalization of GLAM collections and the cultural tourism industry;
  • Audience development and engagement;
  • Traveling along cultural routes: opportunities for intersectoral collaboration and development;
  • Presentation of artistic material in GLAM institutions related to the topic with common inter-cultural denominations;
  • Development of digital collections and their connection with other existing digital libraries or archives;
  • Digital technologies: digitization and digital preservation of cultural heritage in the context of cultural routes and tourism;
  • Development of tools such as web and mobile applications for presenting the travel routes for contemporary audiences;
  • Intercultural dialogue and the context of cultural tourism.

In this paper, the authors present the possibilities of transnational networking and developing innovative cultural routes through participatory research and creative presentations of European cultural heritage in special collections of Adriatic libraries. The purpose of the research, conducted in the framework of the course Travel Writing and Cultural Routes, was to identify collections that contain travel writing material related to the broader Euro-Mediterranean area and to enable its better visibility through the digitization and creation of new European cultural routes. The students, with the help of librarians at the University Library in Pula, explored special collections, such as the Marine Library, and proposed the creation of new cultural routes, following the itineraries of European travel writers in the Adriatic. The conducted research indicated collections and materials in heritage institutions (archives, libraries and museums) in Pula and Istria relevant to the topics of cultural routes and travel in Europe, as well as regional multicultural history. Libraries in Istria and Dalmatia have valuable collections of rare archival material related to European travels to the Adriatic. The cataloguing and digitisation of rare travel texts has the potential to raise awareness of these collections, adding to their significance for academic research and heritage-based tourism. Digital technologies are reshaping traditional static urban typologies, as the museum, urging a rethinking of how Cultural Heritage (CH) is experienced. The work presents the PALIMPSEST Project, an Interreg V-A Greece–Italy funded project, which proposes a dynamic, interactive, participatory, and personalized museum experience in the urban context of Ioannina, Greece, establishing an open-air, immaterial, immersive museum route in the city. The project’s innovative approach involved three methodological stages. In the first stage, a collection of past stories of the city was achieved through transgenerational collaboration of students and older generations. In the second stage, the collected material was organized to create an interactive mobile app, allowing users to access existing and add new stories, fostering bottom-up development. In the last stage, a museum experience was built around interactive installations from selected stories through co-creation processes and dispersed throughout the city’s public space, activated by the visitors via the app. PALIMPSEST established a hybrid, open-air museum route, connecting the ICH with the urban landscape, and creating personalized and unexpected experiences of the city. The project offers a novel way to reconceptualize the museum by integrating digital technologies, arts, storytelling, and active participation, bringing the museum into the open urban space.
