Dear Colleagues,
Miniaturized reactors and separation devices have emerged as transformative platforms in chemical engineering, offering unprecedented control over fluid dynamics, mass/heat transfer, and reaction kinetics. By leveraging microscale phenomena, these systems enable highly efficient dispersion, mixing, flow manipulation, reaction, heat exchange, and separation within compact footprints.
This Special Issue focuses on the latest advances in miniaturized devices that integrate multiple unit operations—such as reaction and separation—into single or cascaded microfluidic systems. We invite contributions covering fundamental insights into multiphase flow behavior, novel device fabrication methods, high-throughput screening, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations, and scale-up strategies. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Microreactors and micro-separators (e.g., micro-distillation, micro-extraction, micro-absorption)
- Integrated reaction-separation microsystems
- Droplet and bubble dynamics in confined geometries
- Micromixers and heat exchangers
- Process intensification through miniaturization
We welcome original research articles, reviews, and case studies that address challenges and opportunities in miniaturized chemical systems. Join us in advancing the frontier of compact, sustainable, and efficient chemical processing.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Separations is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
