Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Materials enable the creation of new sensing elements and devices used in applications ranging from printed electronics, stretchable electronics, image sensors, and wearable/flexible sensors. While conventional metallic and semiconducting materials are exploited to develop sensor technologies, extensive efforts are currently being devoted to developing emerging technologies that can afford previously impossible capability and perform beyond current sensing capability in those emerging applications. For example, emerging advanced materials based on graphene offer a flexible thin-film form factor with outstanding sensing performance based on various sensing modalities of optical, electronic, and electrochemical sensing. The exceptional characteristics of emerging advanced materials such as multi-dimensional carbon-based materials and engineered polymers include high electrical conductivity, mechanical strength and flexibility. Moreover, they are applicable to low-cost, rapid processing of rapidly growing printed biosensing technology, enabling scalable and low-cost devices. This Special Issue comprehensively explores the topics covering 1) emerging advanced materials including graphene and carbon nanotubes, quantum dots, metallic conductors, organic polymers, conductive polymers, composites, semiconductors, etc., 2) manufacturing processes such as 2D printing, 3D printing, additive manufacturing, solution processing, electrospinning, etc., and 3) sensing device technologies and applications ranging in healthcare, architecture, environmental and agricultural monitoring, military and aerospace, consumer electronics, and electric vehicles and so on.
