Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

A smart bandage is a wound dressing that may incorporate sensing and stimulation of the wound healing progress, dispensing medication, and transmission of wound-related data. Smart bandages aim to improve the treatment of chronic wounds and infections and prevent further complications. Smart bandage technology is about to clinically change how we treat wounds through advances in smart sensors and digital technologies that allow the wound condition status to be monitored and streamed wirelessly. Smart bandages will benefit from recent advances in: smart sensors, e-textiles, wearable electronics, low power communications, advanced manufacturing, energy harvesting, and wireless power transfer, amongst others. Medical and healthcare practitioners envisage a future in which the smart bandage will provide a continuous and remote update of wound status and administer the appropriate treatment. Smart bandage research opens up a myriad of challenges to satisfy the needs of the healthcare practitioners and the patients. 

The aim of this Special Issue is to collect recent advances in smart bandage technologies for healthcare. We are inviting submissions to an upcoming Special Issue: “Smart Bandage Technology for Healthcare”. We welcome all original, unpublished work in both paper and letter format, as well as review articles, addressing research in smart bandage technologies. Therefore, topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Smart sensors, power supply (e.g., wireless) and communications (e.g., low power) for smart bandages;
  • Smart textiles, e-textiles, wearable electronics, flexible electronics, energy harvesting research related to smart bandages;
  • Smart bandage fabrication, assembly and manufacturing methods, system integration;
  • Sensors of use in smart bandages:
    • Physiological biomarker detection,
    • Wound temperature detection,
    • Wound pH detection,
    • Wound moisture detection,
    • Wound oxygen detection,
    • Wound Interleukin-6 (IL-6) detection,
    • Wound glucose detection,
    • Wound lactate detection,
    • Wound blood pressure detection,
    • Wound infection status detection,
    • Wound healing status detection,
    • Wound bacteria detection;
  • Actuators for wound healing, stimulation, and wound hygiene management (e.g., to kill bacteria).
  • Smart systems for wound management and wound condition modelling;
  • Internet of Things advances relevant to smart bandages;
  • Battery-free smart bandage systems and wireless systems for smart bandages;
  • Active, passive, and interactive dressings for smart bandages (e.g., bioactive, antimicrobial);
  • Smart bandage system integration and advanced fabrication methods to realise smart bandages.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Sensors is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
