Dear Colleagues,
The introduction of Internet of Things (IoT)-based multimedia sensor networks and the increasing demand for IoT applications in various civilian and military applications have imposed different strict constraints on the quality-of-service (QoS) requirements of image, audio quality, and windows size, in particular for high-quality real-time video media. These different constraints pose several challenges in exploiting the full potential of IoT multimedia communications, including integrated-circuit technologies, radio frequency devices and antennas, and system design and integration, resources management, routing mechanisms, security issues, uncertainty in network topology, and dynamic controls. Assuring optimal utilization of resources as well as satisfying QoS requirements in IoT multimedia applications have created a new challenge in terms of network management, collaborative communication systems, and the need for a specific smart type of sensor devices in wireless multimedia sensor networks (WMSN), designing a new energy-efficient MAC and routing protocol. WMSNs utilize multimedia sensing technology to monitor changes in the surrounding environment and route the collected information via different network architectures to remote controlling units. Therefore, WMSNs are expected to be among the pillars in realizing the IoT paradigm by fostering applications such as smart cities, smart agriculture, smart security, and emergency systems.
Several techniques in IoT communications such as multi-input–multi-output (MIMO), collaborative beamforming, and multipath routing protocols have been extensively used to improve the delivery of multimedia content, providing fault-tolerance routing and supporting QoS in IoT-based WMSNs. The objective of this Special Issue is to bring together state-of-the-art innovations, research activities, and the corresponding standardization impacts of cooperation between the IoT and multimedia sensor networks. We expect that existing and collaborative recent developments in radio frequency system design and implementation of various 5G networking technologies will inspire new requirements, promising technical options to boost the development and applications of WMSNs in the upcoming integration of 5G radios with IoT.
The MDPI Sensors journal solicits original work on “Internet of Things Based Multimedia Sensor Networks” that must not be currently under consideration for publication in other venues. The fields of interest include but are not limited to:
- Multimedia sensor networks;
- MIMO-based device-to-device (D-2-D) and vehicle-to-vehicle communication in IoT multimedia sensor networks;
- Multicast routing and cross-layer protocols for bandwidth-hungry multimedia data transmissions in Internet of Things based multimedia sensor networks;
- New quality-optimized Internet of Things based multimedia sensor network information gathering schemes in energy harvesting/ scavenging systems, smart cities, smart grid, and smart factory;
- Optimal usage of resources for delivery of critical data satisfying intended quality-of-service (QoS) requirements within Internet of Things based multimedia sensor networks
- Efficient media-aware security framework and privacy architectures for facilitating various multimedia applications in the Internet of Things based multimedia sensor networks;
- Energy efficient routing protocols for Internet of Things based multimedia sensor networks;
- New applications, test bed, and emerging architectures for Internet of Things based multimedia sensor networks;
- Wireless sensor networks technologies, issues, and aspects that are critical for future Internet of Things based multimedia sensor networks.
