Biological Nanosensors Using Upconverting Nanomaterials

Special Issue Information

In this Special Issue, authors are encouraged to submit manuscripts exploring the use of upconverting nanomaterials for sensing minute amounts of biomolecules and their dynamics as a function of time. These nanomaterials are so-called “upconverting nanoparticles (UCNP)” and their derivatives. They are usually composed of host materials (fluorides and oxides, etc.) and light-emitting dopant cations such as lanthanides (Er3+, Yb3+ Tm3+, etc.). Their unique optical properties involving efficient near IR absorption and visible emission enable a background-free, continuous, and non-bleaching imaging that is crucial for sensing the intracellular molecules and organelles. In order to be applied as sensors, UCNPs should be functionalized, either chemically or biologically, which is supposed to be highly selective and specific to targeting molecules. Moreover, when these sensors are combined with a variety of techniques in nanotechnology, such as single molecule spectroscopy and manipulation, the power of these tiny nanoparticles would be unprecedented. This issue of Sensors will publish a collection of state-of-the-art advances in the field of the UCNP-based nanosensors.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Sensors is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
