Sensors Webinar | Independent Living: Sensor-Assisted Intelligent Care and Healthcare, 14 October 2026

Welcome to our webinar, hosted by the journal Sensors. The session focuses on the following topic: “Independent Living: Sensor-Assisted Intelligent Care and Healthcare”.
My name is Lili Liu, and I am a professor at the School of Public Health Sciences and Dean of the Faculty of Health at the University of Waterloo. I am joined by Antonio (Tony) Miguel, associate professor in the Department of Occupational Therapy, Faculty of Rehabilitation, the University of Alberta. My research program examines the acceptance and adoption of technologies by older adults, their care partners, healthcare professionals, and unlicensed care personnel. Miguel’s research covers how digital health interventions and health data can enhance the health and well-being of older adults. In May 2026, we were Guest Editors of our first Special Issue focused on advances in sensor-based technologies for health, aging, and intelligent care. Today, we will share information about the second Special Issue on this topic.
As healthcare systems around the world seek new ways to support aging populations and independent living, sensors have emerged as a powerful tool for capturing meaningful information about health, function, and daily life. Combined with advances in analytics and intelligent technologies, sensor-based solutions can support the early detection of risk, inform care decisions, and enable more personalized approaches to healthcare in home and community settings.
In this webinar, two papers published in the first Special Issue will be presented. These and other papers published in the first Special Issue advance the state of the art in sensor-based health monitoring, activity recognition, and intelligent care systems.
Dr. Adriana Rios Rincon will give the first presentation, which focuses on EEG-based engagement monitoring in cognitive games for persons with cognitive decline or dementia. Then, Tony Miguel and I will present the second paper, which describes the evaluation of a high-accuracy home-monitoring system for the assessment and monitoring of frailty. These two papers serve as exemplars of the type and range of papers, including original research articles and reviews, that we invite our colleagues to contribute to the second Special Issue. We will then open the floor for questions about the Special Issue.
