Remote Sensing Methods and Technical Developments in Planetary Geodesy and Geophysics

Dear Colleagues,

Planetary geodesy and geophysics have greatly benefited from advancements in remote sensing technologies, providing unprecedented opportunities to study surfaces, interiors, and dynamics of celestial bodies. From early space explorations to the most recent planetary missions, remote sensing has played an essential role in unraveling the interior structure and evolution of planetary systems. The development of radar and optical sensors, altimeters, and interferometric techniques has enabled the performance detailed mapping and analysis at diverse spatial and temporal scales. These technologies enable the accurate modeling of planetary shape, gravity fields, surface processes, and geodynamics.

This Special Issue welcomes the submission of studies that present methodological innovations and technical developments in remote sensing when applied specifically to planetary geodesy and geophysics. The submission of research that focuses on new observational techniques, data fusion and integration, and novel algorithms for planetary exploration is particularly encouraged.

The scope of this Special Issue includes, but is not limited to, the following topics:

• The measurement and modeling of planetary topography and morphology;
• Planetary gravity and magnetic field mapping;
• Structure and dynamics of planetary interiors;
• Surface deformation and tectonic processes;
• Volcanism, cratering, and surface evolution;
• Planetary atmosphere and its physical interactions;
• Data fusion from multispectral, radar, and thermal sensors;
• Remote sensing for mission planning and navigation;
• Developments in planetary altimetry and gravimetry techniques;
• Synergies between Earth geodesy and planetary studies.

We welcome original research articles and reviews that address the advancement of remote sensing technologies and their ability to unveil the mysteries of celestial bodies.

Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process.
