MDPI Webinar | Exploring the Impact of AI on Academic Research: Applications of AI in the Publishing Industry, 3 July 2025

A message from the webinar Chair:

The release of ChatGPT 3 in late 2022 marked a step change in the impact and use of generative AI in the form of chatbots and other related applications. For better or worse, we all have to learn to live with these powerful and rapidly developing technologies.

In the academic world, the main areas of concern are the impact of AI on teaching and learning, as well as on writing and publishing. The webinar will focus on the latter, offering an overview of the different technologies such as chatbots, large language models, and machine learning. A range of questions will be addressed, including the following:

  • What are the ethical considerations for authors using generative AI in their submissions?
  • How do AI detection tools work, and how reliable are they in identifying AI-generated content?
  • What are the potential risks of relying solely on AI detection tools for manuscript screening?
  • How should authors disclose the use of generative AI in their submission?
