Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The term “One Health” means that the health of people, animals and the ecosystem are interconnected. This concept promotes the application of a collaborative, multidisciplinary, and inter-sectorial approach, and coordinates potential or existing risks that originate from the interface between animal–human ecosystems. The multitude of environmental exposures, such as radiation, chemical contaminants and pollutants in air and water, lifestyle factors, diet, employment and medical interventions, noise, and vibrations, have a strong impact on animal–human health. In the last decade, One Health approaches have increasingly been promoted, leading to the development of new insights into biological events and processes. However, new approaches are needed to take advantage of research, e.g., omics approaches, and among them, proteomics represents a powerful tool for providing information about the interconnectedness of the environment and all living species.

Proteomics is the large-scale study of proteins with the aim to study the set of proteins of the cell at the omic”and global level, both for structural and functional purposes. Proteins are the functional building blocks of cells and give information on the proteome of a given cell or tissue in health or disease, through different phases of a cell’s life, in interaction with the environment, etc. Proteomics includes a variety of technologies in which protein identification is performed with mass spectrometry (MS). Through proteomics approaches, it is possible to understand the complex biological information that leads to disease and to determine how the environment can affect human health, focusing on the precise measurement of substance-induced molecular perturbations that are associated with adverse outcomes in humans, considering that the relationship with the environment is a trigger for disease.

The main focus of this Special Issue of Proteomes is to collect and disseminate advancements in how various proteomics applications have been employed to study the interconnection between systems (i.e., humans, animals, and environment) of practical research, in terms of the One Health approach. We therefore encourage the submission of articles regarding  food safety,  proteomics approaches to understand animal/human health and environmental protein–protein interactions, or post-translational modifications involved in the pathogenesis of disease, as well as detecting biomarkers for early diagnosis and therapeutic targets, and the application of this knowledge to improve environmental quality and human health.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Proteomes is an international peer-reviewed open access quarterly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1800 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
