Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Biopolymers, or natural polymers, are ubiquitous in the natural environment, and their biorenewability and other properties support their widespread use. They are obtained from natural raw materials of plant, animal, or microbial origin. Biopolymers are a collective term for a category encompassing numerous substances, differing in structure, properties, and applications. Biopolymers can often compete with, or even replace, synthetic polymers, which is important given the current challenges facing the natural environment. Addressing the challenges of broadly defined sustainable development is a challenge for the modern world. Biopolymers occupy a strategic position in the context of achieving various sustainable development goals. The circular economy, CO2 emission reduction, by-product management, and environmental protection are all issues related to biopolymers to varying degrees. In this context, functionality, safety, biodegradability, and compatibility are the features of biopolymers expected by various economic sectors, including the agri-food industry.

The agri-food industry, a crucial pillar of the economies of many countries, not only supplies, but also utilizes biopolymers. Innovations in their extraction methods, types, structures, properties, transformations, and application possibilities are just some of the aspects of research conducted by researchers around the world.

I believe that this Special Issue in Polymers dedicated to biopolymers in the agri-food industry will be a compendium of knowledge and scientific innovation in this field. Research articles or review papers may address issues such as the following:

  • Acquisition, structure, properties, and transformations of biopolymers
  • Sustainable development and biopolymers
  • Product and process innovations involving biopolymers and development prospects
  • Environmental, economic, and technological benefits of using biopolymers in the agri-food sector
  • Biodegradability and biocompatibility of biopolymer-based systems
  • Modern analytical methods used in biopolymer research
  • Food and non-food application trends for biopolymers
  • Bioplastics—prospects, benefits, and threats
  • Biopolymers and by-products from the agri-food industry

I look forward to receiving your submissions with great interest.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Polymers is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
