Polymeric Nanoparticles Applied to Therapy and Diagnostics

Nanotechnology has grown prominent in the field of biomedicine by circumventing some deficiencies of current treatments. Nanotechnology approaches protect the active drug from the instabilities of body compartments and drive the drug into the pharmacological targets, reducing adverse effects. Polymeric nanoparticles (PNPs) comprise nanocapsules and nanospheres, highly employed as drug delivery or diagnostic tools. Nanocapsules carry the active molecules, mainly dissolved in an oily core surrounded by a polymeric shell, while nanospheres present a continuous polymeric network in which the active molecule can be retained inside or adsorbed onto their surface. They can be produced in fast processes that can be scaled up, and huge amounts of pre-clinical studies have shown the effectiveness of PNPs in a diversity of experimental models of diseases. This Special Issue aims to highlight pre-clinical studies and translational application of PNPs such as drug-delivery or diagnostics tools. We invite articles on these aspects of PNPs applications, focusing on the most suitable experimental approaches, routes of administrations, toxic effects and on advances on clinical trials to acute and chronic diseases.
