Advances in Oral Drug Delivery Systems

This special issue belongs to the section “Drug Delivery and Controlled Release“.

Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Oral administration remains the most widely used and preferred route of drug delivery, owing to its convenience, patient compliance, and cost-effectiveness. However, the development of effective oral formulations is often challenged by physiological and biochemical barriers, including poor solubility and permeability, enzymatic degradation, and extensive first-pass metabolism. Overcoming these limitations is critical for expanding the range of therapeutic agents that can be administered orally, particularly biologics and other macromolecules.

This Special Issue, titled “Advances in Oral Drug Delivery Systems”, aims to provide a platform for original research articles, reviews, and perspectives addressing recent progress in the design, development, and evaluation of novel oral drug delivery technologies. Contributions that highlight innovative approaches, mechanistic insights, and translational potential are especially encouraged.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Nanotechnology-based and hybrid oral formulations;
  • Polymer- and lipid-based carriers for enhanced bioavailability;
  • Prodrug strategies and molecular modifications;
  • Targeted and controlled-release oral delivery platforms;
  • Oral delivery of peptides, proteins, nucleic acids, and other biologics;
  • In vitro, in silico, and in vivo models for absorption and bioavailability studies;
  • Clinical evaluation, regulatory challenges, and commercialization aspects.

This Special Issue will bring together advances from across disciplines to stimulate further research and accelerate the translation of innovative oral delivery systems into clinical practice.

Submission Information

Authors are invited to submit original manuscripts or comprehensive reviews that fall within the scope of this Special Issue. All submissions will undergo rigorous peer review to ensure high scientific quality and relevance. Detailed submission guidelines can be found on the journal’s website.

We look forward to receiving your contributions and to publishing a collection of high-impact articles that will advance the field of oral drug delivery.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Pharmaceutics is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2900 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
