Novel Topical and Transdermal Delivery Systems: Critical Challenges in Medical and Cosmetic Approaches

This special issue belongs to the section “Drug Delivery and Controlled Release“.

Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to invite you to submit original research and review papers in either the medical or cosmetic field, so long as they are related to innovative systems for administering active ingredients via the skin.

These systems have evolved thanks to technological advancements. Skin administration can serve several purposes, including treating local diseases, healing wounds, and utilizing the skin as a delivery route to target specific areas of the body. Furthermore, dermal administration is helpful not only in treating conditions but also in enabling the application of cosmetic products that maintain or improve the skin's properties and appearance.

Progress over the last several decades has led to a shift in perspective regarding the skin, from an organ that only allowed the transportation of substances with specific physicochemical properties, capable of permeating via passive diffusion, to one that can receive a wide variety of alternatives, favoring the passage of molecules that would otherwise be impossible to administer.

For this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but are not limited to) transdermal drug delivery systems with revolutionary technologies for administering drugs or cosmetic active ingredients; new materials, nanotechnologies, and device-based platforms to overcome skin barriers, provide prolonged therapeutic effects, and enable targeted drug delivery for both local and systemic effects; and wound and infection treatment, transdermal immunizations, responsive biomaterials, AI-assisted pharmaceutical engineering, 3D-printed patches, and smart bioelectronic systems.

I look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Pharmaceutics is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2900 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
