Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The human gut harbors a complex and dynamic microbial ecosystem that plays a central role in maintaining health and influencing disease. Recent advances in sequencing technologies and metabolomics have uncovered the vast diversity of gut microorganisms and their essential functions in digestion, metabolism, immune modulation, and communication with distant organs through the gut–brain axis. Perturbations of this microbial community, often referred to as dysbiosis, have been increasingly linked to the onset and progression of a wide range of diseases.

This Special Issue, Gut Microbiota and Diseases, aims to bring together cutting-edge research and comprehensive reviews that highlight the interplay between gut microbiota composition, microbial metabolites, and host physiology. Contributions will cover both mechanistic insights and translational studies, providing a holistic understanding of how gut microbial alterations contribute to human disease.

By collecting diverse contributions from basic, clinical, and translational research, this Special Issue seeks to advance our understanding of the gut microbiome’s role in human health and disease. Ultimately, it aims to inspire innovative approaches for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of microbiota-associated disorders, paving the way toward personalized medicine.

The Special Issue entitled "Gut Microbiota and Diseases" aims to present recent research on any aspect of the gut microbiota. Some of its focal points include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Dysbiosis and its role in gastrointestinal diseases (e.g., IBD, IBS, colorectal cancer).
  • Gut microbiota and metabolic disorders (obesity, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome).
  • Microbiota–immune system interactions and implications for autoimmune diseases.
  • Influence of gut microbes on neurological and psychiatric conditions (gut–brain axis).
  • Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO)/intestinal methanogen overgrowth (IMO) and its clinical consequences.
  • Microbial metabolites (e.g., short-chain fatty acids, bile acids, tryptophan metabolites) and host health.
  • Probiotics, prebiotics, and dietary interventions for gut microbiota modulation.
  • Antibiotics, microbiota resilience, and long-term health outcomes.
  • Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) and novel therapeutic approaches.

Reviews, original research, and communications are welcome.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Microorganisms is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • Reprint: MDPI Books provides the opportunity to republish successful Special Issues in book format, both online and in print.
