Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Varied microorganisms cause pathogenic infections in aquatic animals, which are a major constraint on aquaculture production. Infections can lead to high mortality, reduced growth, and significant economic losses. Disease manifestation depends strongly on the interaction between pathogen and host, with fish health and welfare greatly influencing disease outbreaks. The control of pathogenic infections in aquatic animals relies more on prevention than treatment. This might be achieved by maintaining optimal water quality, stocking densities, vaccines and, ultimately, proper nutrition. The last factor influences the immune function, and with special supplementation, fish health might be positively stimulated. Therefore, it is important to understand and characterize fish microbiota, and which pathogens are naturally present, as well as the mechanisms involved in their pathogenicity. On the other hand, the identification and characterization of microorganisms that can be used (e.g., probiotics) to enhance fish health and disease resistance is also of the utmost importance.
This Special Issue will focus on pathogenic infections in aquaculture animals and how fish nutrition and welfare might prevent disease outbreaks. Also, the effects on fish microbiota and the importance of the sustainability of the aquaculture sector will be highlighted. We encourage authors to publish reviews, research articles, case reports or short communications. Articles focusing on omics, the integrated characterization of microbiota modulation and the nutritional effects on fish health, and innovative approaches are also welcome for publication in this Special Issue.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Microorganisms is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
