Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The past decades have witnessed a significant surge in research on the human gut microbiota, driven by its increasingly recognized importance in maintaining human health. This expanding field spans multiple disciplines, including culturomics, metagenomics, genomics, metabolomics, and metatranscriptomics. This vast and intricate microbial community plays a pivotal role in the host's overall wellness through interactions with the immune system and the regulation of metabolism. The gut microbiota is highly diverse, and it is influenced by genetic, nutritional, and environmental factors. Imbalances in microbiota can trigger a variety of diseases, including metabolic, gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, neurologic disorders, and cancer. It indirectly influences the success of therapeutic interventions, such as immunotherapy treatments. Therapeutic strategies targeting gut microbial ecosystems, such as fecal microbiota transplantation or probiotic, prebiotic, symbiotic, and postbiotic supplementation emerge as promising interventions for several diseases. Italian research groups have been pioneers in several areas of microbiota research, notably in the isolation and characterization of Bifidobacterium species and their development as probiotics. With this Special Issue of Microorganisms, we aim to showcase the state of the art of Italian studies on the gut microbiota and highlight novel or innovative approaches. We invite authors from diverse fields to contribute their work and help provide a comprehensive overview of this rapidly evolving and highly relevant topic.

Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Microorganisms is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
