Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The human microbiome plays a pivotal role in shaping host immunity and health. While the gut microbiome has been extensively studied, the microbiome in the respiratory tract is now also recognized as a crucial mediator of human health and diseases. Dysbiosis of the respiratory microbiome is associated with dysregulated respiratory immune response, which is implicated in the pathogenesis and progression of a wide spectrum of respiratory diseases, including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, bronchiectasis, pneumonia, lung cancer, and so on. Furthermore, the emerging concept of the gut–lung and lung–brain axes highlights a complex, bidirectional crosstalk, suggesting that the respiratory microbiome can systemically influence the functionality of distal organs.
This Special Issue, “Human Airway Microbiome and Immunity”, aims to collate cutting-edge research that deepens our understanding of these dynamic interactions. We welcome original research and review articles that develop innovative methodologies for investigating the respiratory microbiome, exploring the biological roles of the respiratory microbiome in health and diseases, elucidating the mechanisms of microbiome-host interactions in the airways, and investigating the crosstalk between the respiratory microbiome and distal organs. We are particularly interested in studies utilizing multi-omics approaches (e.g., metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, metaproteomics, metabolomics, radiomics) to unravel these complex relationships. The ultimate goal is to highlight novel insights that could lead to microbiome-based diagnostics and therapeutics for respiratory health and diseases.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Microorganisms is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
