Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

We invite researchers, clinicians, veterinarians, and public health experts to contribute to the upcoming Special Issue, "One Health: Innovations in Emerging Infectious Disease Research." Even after the successful control of SARS-CoV-2 through the invention of the rapid, advanced vaccines, new strains of SARS-CoV-2 are continuously evolving, leading to the emergence of new infections across the world. There were reports of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in animals such as deer, dogs, and cats. The recent emergence of highly pathogenic H5N1 in cattle indicates the adaptability of the virus, extending its natural hosts. This cross in the species barrier indicates that the virus’ mutations help it adapt to new host systems, which might lead to the emergence of infections at a later stage. Recently, the emergence of exotic infectious diseases such as the lumpy skin disease (LSD) in cattle and African Swine Fever in pigs in southern Asia have affected animals. Thus, it is evident that microorganisms are constantly mutating to adapt to new host environments, evolving into emerging infectious diseases of humans and animals. This Special Issue aims to spotlight the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health, showcasing cutting-edge approaches to understanding and mitigating infectious disease threats. It is the right time to communicate ongoing research on the evolution of viral, bacterial, parasitic, and fungal infections. This considered, we invite full-length articles and peer reviews for submission, covering the following topics, among others:

  1. Emerging hemorrhagic diseases of humans and animals;
  2. Emergence of HPAI in birds, cattle, and humans.
  3. Policy frameworks rooted in the One Health paradigm.
  4. Neglected viral/bacterial/fungal/parasitic infections;
  5. Long-COVID-19 complications post-recovery from SARS-CoV-2 infections;
  6. Endemic or epidemic diseases of zoonotic importance;
  7. Advanced anti-viral/vaccine developments for infectious diseases;
  8. Immunology of infectious diseases;
  9. In vivo models to study the mechanisms of infectious diseases;
  10. Development of advanced in vitro techniques to study infectious diseases.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Microorganisms is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • Reprint: MDPI Books provides the opportunity to republish successful Special Issues in book format, both online and in print.
