Dear Colleagues,
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) remain among the most pressing threats to patient safety and health system resilience worldwide. Robust epidemiological evidence is essential not only to understand the burden, drivers, and transmission dynamics of resistant pathogens in healthcare settings, but also to inform effective prevention, surveillance, and control strategies.
In recent years, AMR has been elevated to the highest levels of international political commitment, including United Nations, G20, and World Health Assembly processes, with a strong emphasis on a One Health approach. While One Health has become a central organizing framework for global and national AMR strategies, its definition and practical application remain heterogeneous, and its relevance to healthcare-associated infections is not uniformly conceptualized across stakeholders. At the same time, resistant infections arising in healthcare settings constitute a substantial proportion of the overall AMR burden in many countries, underscoring the central role of healthcare systems in the global AMR response.
In this context, this Special Issue aims to bring together high-quality epidemiological, microbiological, and implementation-focused research that supports the translation of global AMR strategies into effective action within healthcare systems. We welcome original research and reviews addressing the epidemiology of HAIs and AMR, surveillance systems and methodologies, outbreak investigations, genomic and molecular epidemiology, and infection prevention and control interventions, with particular attention to studies that inform or evaluate the implementation of national, regional, or global AMR strategies.
