Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Over the years, great emphasis has been placed on the connection between mathematics and medicine. The ability of mathematics to find new answers to the increasingly complex questions of medicine has given this field a special role in the growth of knowledge and related innovations in the medical field. The most widespread application of mathematics in medicine is the use of probability and statistics in validating new drugs or procedures or in estimating survival rates. In recent years, more and more researchers have focused on finding mathematical models that can describe complex real-world systems in mathematical terms. Common mathematical models include differential equation models, statistical models, machine learning models, and network science models. Depending on the nature of the specific medical problem, these models can provide accurate answers to medical questions. However, although mathematics is an important contributor to medicine, the research field of mathematical modeling seems to be far from clinical research and, more importantly, from routine clinical practice. The goal of this Special Issue is to introduce non-mathematical medical professionals to the world of mathematical modeling so that they can find a new research approach to the many medical questions that need to be answered. Through the contributions of mathematicians and medical professionals, the Special Issue aims to bring the two fields closer together so that mathematics and medicine can work together in the search for innovative, patient-centered, and accurate answers. This Special Issue will comprise research and review papers that address the many applications of mathematical modeling in health care and aim to narrow the gap between mathematics and medicine. We welcome contributions on methodological aspects of mathematical modeling; in-depth statistical applications for disease diagnosis and prognosis (including meta-analyses accompanied by a sound methodological approach); machine learning approaches for disease prediction, diagnosis, or treatment (novel approaches or accuracy assessment are welcome); and network-based medical models for the construction and analysis of biologically based complex systems. We encourage researchers to propose contributions in various medical fields and to include a section in their paper describing the practical relevance of the proposed model in medicine to raise awareness of the role of mathematics in advancing the medical research field.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Mathematics is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • e-Book format: Special Issues with more than 10 articles can be published as dedicated e-books, ensuring wide and rapid dissemination.
