Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Marine natural products represent a vast and largely untapped reservoir of bioactive molecules with exceptional potential for dermocosmetic innovation. These compounds exhibit antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, photoprotective, regenerative, and microbiome-modulating properties that help preserve skin homeostasis, prevent premature aging, and support repair and regeneration.

Recent developments in blue biotechnology, eco-responsible extraction, and formulation science have enabled the sustainable production and optimization of these compounds. Advances in encapsulation, hydrogel matrices, nanocarriers, and light-activated systems are driving the emergence of a new generation of functional dermocosmetic ingredients with demonstrated biological relevance.

Innovative applications include acne management through marine-derived photoactive molecules, offering targeted non-antibiotic antimicrobial effects, and supportive dermocosmetic care for patients undergoing cancer therapy, designed to reinforce the skin barrier, reduce inflammation, and alleviate treatment-related side effects. Other research directions involve modulating cutaneous immunity and the microbiota, preventing photoaging and cellular senescence, and developing marine biopolymer-based biomaterials for wound healing and regeneration.

This Special Issue welcomes original research and review papers addressing the discovery, structural characterization, biotechnological production, formulation, and pharmacological evaluation of marine natural products with dermocosmetic potential. Studies linking chemistry, biotechnology, pharmacology, and clinical validation are particularly encouraged.

By bringing together interdisciplinary expertise, this Special Issue aims to highlight the most recent advances in marine-derived dermocosmetics and their contribution to safe, effective, and sustainable skin health solutions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Marine Drugs is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2900 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
