Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

In the Anthropocene, intensifying human activities and accelerating climate change are profoundly altering the structure and function of land–climate–ecosystem systems. These coupled changes give rise to increasingly complex spatial and temporal patterns in land use intensity, hydrological processes, and ecological risks. However, despite advances in interdisciplinary research, our understanding of the mechanisms underlying dynamic feedbacks and systemic vulnerabilities in land surface, water cycle, and eco-environment interactions remains limited. Addressing these intertwined challenges calls for a fundamental rethinking of how we conceptualize, model, and manage human–natural systems. This is especially urgent in regions experiencing rapid landscape transformation, where land use decisions, climate change, and ecological resilience are deeply interdependent.

The goal of this Special Issue is to collect papers (original research articles and review papers) to give insights about the complex and evolving interactions between human activities, climate change, and environmental–ecological systems. We are particularly interested in studies that reveal how land use dynamics, hydrological processes, and landscape patterns respond to anthropogenic and climatic drivers across spatial and temporal scales.

Aligned with the interdisciplinary scope of Land, this Special Issue welcomes contributions that bridge hydrological modeling, water cycle analysis, land system science, and ecological risk assessment. Emphasis will be placed on methodological innovations—including integrated methodology, data-driven approaches, and remote sensing applications—that deepen our understanding of coupled human–natural systems.

This Special Issue will welcome manuscripts that link the following themes:

  • Hydrological modeling and water cycle analysis in land–climate–ecosystem systems;
  • Spatial heterogeneity and scaling issues in land use, geomorphology, and landscape dynamics;
  • Ecological risk and environmental sustainability under human and climatic pressures;
  • Coupled human–natural system assessments and socio-environmental feedback mechanisms;
  • Integrated methodology and data-driven approaches for modeling and prediction;
  • Remote sensing and geospatial analytics for land system monitoring and evaluation.
