Dear Colleagues,
The occurrence of emerging contaminants in aquatic environments, including pharmaceuticals, endocrine disruptors, and PFAS, represents one of the most pressing challenges in contemporary environmental science. Due to their chemical stability and resistance to conventional treatment processes, these xenobiotics can persist in water bodies and may pose significant risks to ecosystems and human health. In response, bioremediation has gained increasing attention as a sustainable and cost-effective strategy for the removal and transformation of these contaminants. Nature-based solutions, such as phytoremediation and microbial-driven processes, provide eco-friendly approaches to pollutant degradation and immobilization. At the same time, advances in environmental biotechnology, including engineered microbial consortia, omics-based approaches, and optimized enzymatic pathways, are enhancing the efficiency and scalability of these strategies. These innovations are also improving our understanding of contaminant fate, metabolic pathways, and the toxicity of degra-dation by-products, thereby enabling more targeted and effective remediation approaches. This Special Issue aims to highlight cutting-edge research on the bioremediation of emerging contaminants in aquatic systems, emphasizing the integration of nature-based solutions with innovative biotechnological tools. Original research articles, comprehensive reviews, and case studies addressing these challenges in the context of global environmental change are warmly welcomed.

All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process.
