Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues, 

Recent advances in natural language processing and Artificial Intelligence have contributed to the rapidly spreadinguse  of natural language (human language) asuser interface to computing devices (e.g., Amazonecho, Googlehome, Apple Siri, etc.). There are many potential applications of Natural Language Interface (NLI) to IoT and wearable devices, home assistive technologies, and many intelligent devices usually rely on limited or restricted input choices for user interactions. NLI offers alternative and flexible user interfaces to smart computing devices. NLI is an alternative to graphical user interfaces for people with disabilities (e.g., people who find typing difficult due to physical limitations but can speak). Also, NLI application extends to software development, database querying via speech, command and control devices, manufacturing machines, and many more. Despite the potential benefits and applications of NLI, there are many challenges and difficulties due to the ambiguous nature of natural language and the challenges of some usage environments (e.g., background noise). This makes it difficult to perform accurate and smooth communication between human and machine. This Special Issue focuses on original contributions that address challenges, design approaches, and evaluation methods for NLIs to intelligent computing devices and applications.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • NLIs for wearable devices, IoT systems, medical devices, manufacturing, security systems and consumers
  • Speech processing
  • Text processing
  • Machine translation
  • Data collection and annotation
  • NLP tools and resources (e.g., natural language preprocessing and normalisation, tokenisation, parsing and chunking)

Manuscript Submission Information

Chatbots are intelligent conversational computer systems designed to mimic human conversation to enable automated online guidance and support. The increased benefits of chatbots led to their wide adoption by many industries in order to provide virtual assistance to customers. Chatbots utilise methods and algorithms from two Artificial Intelligence domains: Natural Language Processing and Machine Learning. However, there are many challenges and limitations in their application. In this survey we review recent advances on chatbots, where Artificial Intelligence and Natural Language processing are used. We highlight the main challenges and limitations of current work and make recommendations for future research investigation. Full article
