Trends, Opportunities, and Challenges of Online Learning in Medical and Higher Education

Dear Colleagues,

In the last few decades, online learning has become popular in higher education and is being widely utilized in medical and other higher educational institutes throughout the world. Online education is being delivered in an online environment via synchronously or asynchronously using digital learning tools where students do not need to be co-present in a physical space. Online learning is flexible, accessible, cost-effective, and allows for a customized learning experience in a wide range of programs which can reach a larger number of global students. The COVID-19 pandemic has forced higher education institutions to adapt online learning and radically changed the concept of traditional face-to-face learning.

This Special Issue welcomes contributions on trends, opportunities, and challenges of online learning in medical and higher education during the pre-COVID-19 era, COVID-19 pandemic, and beyond. We encourage the authors to write their experiences of emergency remote teaching and assessment in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the plan for effective online learning during the post-COVID-19 period, especially in resource-poor settings to develop infrastructure and building capacity to enhance the quality and access of online learning.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. International Medical Education is an international peer-reviewed open access quarterly journal published by MDPI.
