Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Worldwide, the burden of mental health disorders is overwhelming and, despite decades of research and intervention development, mental health disorders are still poorly understood. Maternal depression has an enormous impact on a woman’s life and will have a major impact on parenting and, hence, on child development (including mental health), with long-lasting deleterious effects that would endure through the life course of the mother and their children. The association between maternal and child mental health disorders is one of the most consistent findings in mental health research and we are just now beginning to understand how mental health problems or a poor mental health hygiene during the first years of life could influence someone’s entire life. However, much still needs to be done; we still need more empirical evidence coming from different settings, on the effects of maternal depression over the mother’s mental health and her children and how to prevent and deal with these problems
