Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

In the last few decades, cardiovascular surgery has undergone continuous and remarkable advancements. The advent of minimally invasive, robotic, and transcatheter techniques has significantly reduced morbidity and mortality associated with conventional open-heart surgeries. Additionally, patients who were previously considered high-risk or unsuitable candidates for surgery are now able to undergo invasive treatments.

Notwithstanding, advancements in cardiovascular surgery go beyond reducing invasiveness and improving devices and technologies. Pre- and postoperative care, risk assessment, and decision-making processes have also evolved significantly, and the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) has played a crucial role in this evolution.

Whether improving preoperative planning through AI-enabled imaging and computational modeling, making intraoperative care more precise and reducing complications through AI-enhanced systems that enable real-time adaptive guidance, or even improving postoperative monitoring and predictive analytics, AI has proven invaluable at every stage of cardiovascular care. Despite these benefits, there are still limitations and ethical concerns regarding AI's role in such a complex field, and it is recognized that AI will never replace human intelligence, but can, instead, complement human expertise and sensitivity.

With this Special Issue, titled Application of Artificial Intelligence in Cardiovascular Surgery, we aim to explore the role of AI and assess its impact on Cardiovascular Surgery.

We are pleased to invite you to share your experiences regarding the role of AI in revolutionary advancements in cardiovascular surgery, in terms of risk assessment, complication prediction, surgical planning, postoperative care and telemonitoring, or any other innovative applications.

This Special Issue welcomes original research articles and reviews. Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Clinical trials;
  • Systematic reviews and meta-analyses;
  • Prospective and retrospective cohort studies;
  • Validation studies;
  • Case reports or first-in-man studies.

I look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Healthcare is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
