The Burden of Dysphagia and Its Effect on Social Participation

This special issue belongs to the section “Dysphagia“.

Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

As the Guest Editor for a special edition in Geriatrics (https://www.mdpi.com/journal/geriatrics, ISSN 2308-3417) on “The Burden of Dysphagia and Its Effect on Social Participation”,  it is my pleasure to invite you to submit an article .

Dysphagia is a common problem affecting many people around the world. The inability to safely swallow can have major negative effects on peoples’ ability to interact with others. A Western or Global North model is often used to manage it, which may not be culturally or economically appropriate for many people. The management (nutrition and access to services) of a swallowing impairment places a large burden on the person and their family, resulting in poor physical and mental health.

Topics could include new research or reviews and cover the full spectrum of medical conditions, from frailty, learning difficulties, and non-neurological diseases to how swallowing is managed toward the end of a person’s life in different cultural, social, and economic environments.

Guest Editor
