Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Urban forestry, the traditional forest products industry, and ecosystem services each constitute important components of local and regional economies. It is necessary to estimate the contribution of these forest resources in order to determine the role played by this industry in the region. Understanding the economic contributions and importance of urban forestry, forest products industries, and ecosystem services has become essential for policymakers, public and private agencies, and academics as these industries have intimate connections to jobs, income, and taxes. Additionally, economic contribution and impact analysis can aid in the formulation of state and federal policies, regulations and related management activities as these actions affect revenue, taxes, employment, and income. Thus, it is necessary to periodically assess the economic contribution of the forestry sector in order to provide a consistent perspective and track the industry's contributions over time.

Tracking the economic contribution of the forestry sectors and ecosystem services is critical for several reasons. First, quantifying the magnitude of these contributions is essential to garnering support for urban forestry, forest products industry, and ecosystem services. Second, documenting changes in these activities over time is a useful method for measuring the economic health of these activities. Third, the economic contribution data can be used to assess if changes in policy, legislation, or tax law affect urban forestry and forest-based economic activity. Finally, documenting the shifts in urban forestry and forest-based economic activity may indicate how responsive these activities are to changes in local supply and demand. Therefore, this Special Issue aims to present scientific findings on the economic contribution and economic impact of urban forestry, forest products industries, and forest ecosystem services on the local, regional, and national economies. We encourage scholars working in the fields of forestry, urban and community forestry, ecosystem services, socioeconomics, forest management and policy analysis to submit an array of articles, including case studies, novel approaches, and regional economic analyses to promote knowledge and strategies in urban forestry, forest products industries, and ecosystem services.
