Dear Colleagues,
Global climate change will affect every aspect of society; no population, economy, or geography will remain untouched by its effects. It is widely agreed that mitigating and adapting to the effects of global climate change will require substantial improvements in existing technologies and the development of radical new technologies if we are to avoid the worst of the projected ecological and environmental disasters. One of the largest contributors to global climate change is energy generation, and, therefore, it must be a primary focus of global innovation efforts if any progress is to be made toward averting catastrophic consequences.
Over the past ten years, there has been no lack of research published about individual technologies in electric power generation and renewable energy; however, many aspects of the relationship between invention, innovation, and renewable energy remain largely unexplored. Can invention rates be accelerated in renewable energy technologies? How can more novel and radical technologies be created that address climate adaption and mitigation? What technologies hold the most promise for technological change and invention? Finally, how can societies innovate socially, economically, and financially around the stranded assets from the displaced fossil fuel generation, an enormous stumbling block to a renewable energy transition?
The purpose of this Special Issue is to publish the best insights from systems-level research on invention, innovation, and technological change around renewable energy, carbon sequestration, and climate adaptation and mitigation. We will evaluate this research with some consideration to public policy and actionable solutions for policymakers and practitioners. Given the systems-level focus and the eye to policy incentives and solutions we anticipate this issue will experience exceptionally high readership and citations as it serves a particularly large audience.
There are no specific restrictions on the topics for this Special Issue, but we encourage submissions of the highest merit from authors. The breadth and originality of the research will be the primary consideration for publication.

Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Energies is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
