Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Renewable energy technologies play a crucial role in the energy transition, which is the shift in the global energy sector from fossil fuel-based systems to low-carbon sources, for achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. It has been estimated that renewable energy systems, which can exploit solar energy, wind energy, vibration kinetic energy, thermal energy, electromagnetic fields energy, and so on, could supply two-thirds of the actual total global energy demand. Renewable energy systems can range from a large-scale power generation system (kW to MW, such as in the case of wind turbines or photovoltaic plants) to low-power energy harvesting systems (mW to W, such as vibration energy harvesting or thermal energy harvesting). Whichever is the energy source or the power range, a renewable energy system always needs the following essential elements. A transduction device exploiting a proper technology to convert the renewable energy source into electrical energy (e.g., the photovoltaic module or the vibration energy harvesting device). A power electronic circuit to interface the transduction device to an electrical load and/or to a storage device (e.g., a DC/DC converter, an inverter, or a rectifier). A proper control technique to optimize the energy conversion (e.g., a Maximum Power Point Tracking control).

This Special Issue aims to present and disseminate the most recent advances related to theoretical studies, numerical and experimental results, and applications of technologies and circuits for renewable energy systems. The objective is to bring together researchers adopting several different approaches and working on the above topics, and to promote and share as much as possible top-level research in the field of renewable energy systems.

Topics of interest for publication include, but are not limited to, transduction technologies, power electronic interfaces, and optimization techniques:

  • Photovoltaic systems (both stand-alone ones and grid-connected ones).
  • Linear motion vibration energy harvesting (e.g., piezoelectric, electromagnetic, and magnetostrictive).
  • Rotational vibration energy harvesting (e.g., Mechanical Motion Rectifier-based systems, regenerative suspensions, backpack energy harvesters, and wave energy converters).
  • Wind turbines.
  • Thermoelectric generators.
  • Electric field energy harvesters.
  • Magnetic field energy harvesters.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Energies is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
