Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The urgent global transition towards sustainable energy systems is critically dependent on breakthroughs in electrochemical energy storage. This Special Issue aims to showcase cutting-edge research and review articles that address the fundamental and applied challenges in this rapidly evolving field. We seek to compile a collection of high-quality papers that push the boundaries of material design, deepen our understanding of electrochemical mechanisms, and bridge the gap between laboratory innovation and practical device engineering.

The scope encompasses the entire development cycle, from the rational design and novel synthesis of advanced materials (e.g., nanostructured electrodes, innovative electrolytes, and catalytic interfaces) to their detailed characterization and implementation in high-performance devices. A particular emphasis will be placed on studies utilizing in situ and operando techniques to probe reaction mechanisms, catalyst dynamics, and the evolution of interfaces in real-time. Furthermore, we encourage submissions on engineering research that focuses on scalability, device integration, and performance under realistic operating conditions.

We welcome original research and review articles covering, but not limited to, the following topics:

  • Novel Material Synthesis: Design and fabrication of nanostructured electrodes, solid-state electrolytes, catalytic materials (e.g., for ORR, OER, HER), and composite materials for batteries, supercapacitors, and fuel cells.
  • Advanced Characterization: Application of in situ/operando spectroscopic, microscopic, and diffraction techniques (e.g., XRD, XAS, Raman, TEM, SEM) to elucidate structural, chemical, and electronic changes during operation.
  • Mechanistic Studies: Fundamental investigation of charge storage mechanisms, interfacial ion transport, catalytic reaction pathways, degradation processes, and the identification of critical intermediates.
  • Interfacial Chemistry: Studies focused on the solid–electrolyte interphase (SEI), cathode–electrolyte interphase (CEI), and other critical interfaces that govern device performance and longevity.
  • Device Engineering and Integration: Research on improving energy density, power density, cycle life, safety, and the manufacturing scalability of electrochemical energy storage devices.
  • Emerging Systems: Exploration of next-generation technologies, including but not limited to sodium/potassium-ion batteries, multivalent batteries, solid-state batteries, and redox flow batteries.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Crystals is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2100 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
