Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The cosmetic industry is one of the biggest industries in world, and it is always in constant change and development to keep up with new trends and its customers needs. Over the past few years, consumers have become more aware of the need to purchase more sustainable products, as well as products with less synthetic ingredients. Therefore, these current desires of people and the planet have contributed to the research and study of new strategies to achieve these trends and to decrease the use of synthetic ingredients.

The increase of food processing has contributed massively to the generation of agro-industrial by-products, whose inadequate treatment, disposal, and accumulation generates socioeconomic and environmental concerns. However, some of these by-products, such as peels, shells, leaves, and seeds, among others, are extremely rich in active compounds (carotenoids, phenolics, flavonoids, and essential oils, among others) that display biological activity with benefits to human health, namely antioxidant and antimicrobial properties.

Different strategies can be used to improve the stability and to incorporate these natural active compounds in cosmetics formulations. The possibility of replacing synthetic products for ingredients prevenient of natural sources is of enormous importance and relevance to the cosmetic industry, since it is evolving towards sustainability and the development of natural products.

Therefore, this Special Issue seeks to provide a fundamental understanding and the current strategies to improve valorization strategy of agro-industrial by-products and their application in cosmetic products.
