Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The second Workshop on Systems and Technologies for IT/OT Integration in Industry 4/5.0 Environments (SITE) is proposed within the IEEE International Workshop on Computer Aided Modeling and Design of Communication Links and Networks (IEEE CAMAD) 2025 in Tempe, AZ, United States, on October 14–16, 2025. For more information about the conference, please visit here: https://site2025.spilab.es/ .This timely workshop aims to facilitate a cross-disciplinary platform for discussions and technical presentations on IT/OT integration in Industry 4/5.0 environments by bringing together practitioners and researchers from academia and industry. Additionally, it aims to compile the latest research and development advances and trends in Industry 4/5.0. AI and DT provide high-performance simulation models of IT/OT processes in modern factories. Integration of these technologies, along with edge computing, big data analytics, and the cloud continuum, into production lines can further augment the potential for a reliable convergence of IT and OT layers within modern Industry 4/5.0-compliant factories by opening new directions and opportunities.

The authors of the selected papers presented at the workshop are invited to submit extended versions to this Special Issue of Computers after the conference. Submitted papers should be extended to the size of regular research or review articles, with at least a 50% extension of new results. All submitted papers will undergo our standard peer-review procedure. Accepted papers will be published in open access format in Computers and collected together in this Special Issue’s website. Accepted extended papers will be published free of charge. There are no page limitations in this journal.

We also invite regular submissions related to the latest challenges, technologies, solutions, techniques, and fundamentals pertaining to the topic of this Special Issue. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Application of industrial cloud continuum.
  • IIoT platforms and service orchestration.
  • 5G/6G communication for industrial deployments.
  • Computing continuum for smart factories services.
  • Digital twins for industrial process or product monitoring.
  • Edge data center deployment in industrial environments.
  • ML- and AI-based approaches cloud/edge-based smart factory applications.
  • AI-driven models, architectures, and frameworks for industrial edge computing.
  • Reliable communication protocols in industrial production lines.
  • Experiences on the (re-)use of open platforms for cloud-integrated smart cities services.
  • Design and evaluation tools for scalability and efficient resource allocation in Industry 4.0.
  • ML evaluation for automatic road anomaly detection and predictive maintenance.
  • Models and paradigms for the management of cloud/MEC services within/between industrial data.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Computers is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1800 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
