Catalysis for Medicine: Challenges and Opportunities

Dear Colleagues,

Although at first glance, it seems that catalysis and medicine are completely independent of each other, nothing could be further from the truth. Progress in the area of catalysis, in particular, and in the area of nanochemistry has made it possible to extend the possibilities for its use in saving human health and life. This important aspect of the application of catalysis is still in both the cognitive and application phase, and its further development is unquestionable. Furthermore, a new concept has already emerged in literature – “nanocatalytic medicine”. This contemporary development of both medicine and catalysis represents, on the one hand, a major research challenge for interdisciplinary teams and, on the other hand, it leads us to believe that this investigation will contribute to a significant improvement in the effectiveness of treatment. Perhaps, it will soon be possible to paraphrase Alwin Mittasch that medicine without catalysis would be akin to a sword without a handle, a light without brilliance, a bell without sound.

This Special Issue on “Catalysis for Medicine: Challenges and Opportunities” aims to compile cutting-edge research in nanocatalysts in the context of therapeutic effects and catalytic reactions for optimized therapeutic outcomes. Furthermore, a state-of-the-art view of controlled drug release via catalytic agents, catalysis-assisted immunotherapy as well as nanocatalyst applications in diagnostics are particularly welcome.
