Dear Colleagues,
The increasing atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2) is a defining challenge of our time, driving climate change and demanding urgent, innovative strategies for a sustainable future. While emission reduction at source remains paramount, technologies for carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) are critical complementary pillars. Within this framework, the conversion of captured CO2 into valuable fuels, chemicals, and materials presents a transformative opportunity to close the carbon cycle and establish a circular carbon economy.
This Special Issue focuses on the pivotal role of catalysis in enabling and integrating these processes. Efficient CO2 capture often relies on advanced sorbents with catalytic functionalities for enhanced kinetics and regeneration. Subsequently, the conversion of this inert molecule into products requires catalytic activation to overcome significant thermodynamic and kinetic barriers. Recent advancements in catalytic science—including the design of nanostructured materials, single-atom catalysts, multifunctional systems, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), and tailored thermal, electrochemical, and photochemical catalysts—are opening new pathways for efficient and selective CO2 transformation.
We invite contributions that explore the latest breakthroughs in catalyst design, mechanistic understanding, and integrated process development for both CO2 capture and its subsequent conversion to methane, methanol, higher hydrocarbons, syngas, or other value-added compounds. This Special Issue aims to showcase cutting-edge research that bridges molecular-level innovation with scalable technological solutions for mitigating carbon emissions and creating sustainable chemical feedstocks.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Catalysts is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
