Dear Colleagues,
The increasing generation of biomass waste from agricultural, forestry, food, municipal, and industrial activities represents both an environmental challenge and an opportunity for sustainable resource recovery. Within the framework of the circular bioeconomy, biomass waste valorization has emerged as a promising strategy for converting renewable resources into high-value materials while reducing waste disposal, greenhouse gas emissions, and dependence on fossil-based resources. Before conversion, upstream processing steps such as drying and the extraction of valuable bioactive fractions can improve feedstock quality and enable a cascading use of biomass residues. Advanced thermal, chemical, and hydrothermal conversion technologies then transform these residues into functional carbon materials, including biochar, hydrochar, activated carbon, and carbon-based composites. Through tailored synthesis, activation, and surface modification, these materials can be engineered to achieve high surface area, tunable porosity, and specific surface functionalities for advanced applications. This Special Issue aims to highlight recent advances in the feedstock pretreatment, production, functionalization, and characterization of biomass-derived carbon materials, with emphasis on their use as adsorbents, catalysts, and functional supports for environmental remediation, water and soil treatment, catalysis, and energy-related technologies, integrating waste valorization, advanced material design, and circular economy principle.

All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process.
