Dr. Asghar is an Associate Professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, at Florida Atlantic University, and since 2014, he has been the Director of the Asghar Lab: Micro and Nanotechnology in Medicine (http://faculty.eng.fau.edu/asghar/). Previously, he held a postdoctoral appointment at Harvard Medical School and the Harvard–MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology, Harvard University (July 2012–April 2014). Later, he joined the Stanford School of Medicine as a Research Fellow before joining FAU.

His research interests lie in the areas of infectious disease diagnostics, point-of-care medical devices, and imaging technologies for healthcare. He has published over 70 peer-reviewed journal papers, over 50 conference proceedings, 4 book chapters, and 4 patent applications. He has received various international and national awards: the “2022 Distinguished Engineering Educator Award by The Engineers’ Council”, “2022 Senior Faculty Research Award by FAU College of Engineering and Computer Science”, “2020 NSF CAREER Award”, “2020 New Faculty Researcher Award by American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE SE)”, “2020 Researcher of the Year Award by FAU”, “Outstanding STEM Educator Award, by The Engineers’ Council 2018”, “Humanity in Science Award 2016”, and the “Faculty Mentoring Award 2015”. His research work has received excellent media attention and has been recognized by many premier magazines, including Newsweek, Wired UK, Popular Science, Sciencedaily, and Engadget, along with many others. He has been invited to various TV news channels to talk about his research, including West Palm Beach TV (WPTV) and WPLG news. He has also been invited to talk about biosensors on live radio programs: “Doctor’s Radio, NY” and National Public Radio (NPR), Miami. The honors and recognition he has received prove his successful track record in applying forefront technologies to problems in disease diagnostics and focusing on disposable microchips for point-of-care and bedside applications.
