Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Obesity-related risk is increasingly recognized as a multidimensional process that cannot be fully captured by body mass index alone. Individuals with similar BMI may differ substantially in visceral adiposity, ectopic fat deposition, skeletal-muscle reserve, metabolic health, inflammatory burden, and biological ageing status, leading to heterogeneous risks of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, fatty liver disease, cancer, frailty, disability, and premature mortality. This Special Issue aims to bring together clinical, imaging, omics, and artificial intelligence studies that refine obesity assessment and improve disease-risk stratification beyond conventional anthropometry. We welcome original research, brief reports, reviews, and translational perspectives that evaluate novel adiposity indices, body composition measures, metabolic phenotypes, imaging-derived fat metrics, epigenetic and metabolomic biomarkers, and machine-learning models for obesity phenotyping. Studies may address hidden high-risk phenotypes, including metabolically unhealthy normal weight, normal-weight obesity, sarcopenic obesity, and visceral or ectopic adiposity, as well as their implications for prevention, clinical decision-making, and healthy ageing. By integrating mechanistic, biomarker, and population-level evidence, this Special Issue seeks to support more precise, actionable, and equitable approaches to obesity-related disease prevention and management.
