Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Neuroscience studies have revealed the key molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying nociceptor sensitization, neuronal plasticity, endogenous analgesic systems, and the transition from acute to chronic pain states. These processes are shaped by coordinated interactions between sensory neurons, immune signaling, and hormonal influences, which together modulate pain sensitivity and persistence. Evidence further indicates that changes in sensory neuron gene expression and intracellular signaling pathways contribute to the development of long-lasting pain phenotypes. In parallel, endogenous pain modulatory systems, including descending inhibitory pathways and neuromodulatory circuits, play a central role in regulating pain intensity and facilitating resolution under physiological and pathological conditions.
This Special Issue of Biomedicines welcomes original research articles, reviews, and short communications focused on the molecular and cellular mechanisms of pain. Particular interest will be given to studies investigating peripheral sensory neuron function, gene expression changes in nociceptive pathways, endogenous pain control mechanisms, neuroimmune and neuroendocrine interactions, and processes driving chronic pain states.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Molecular and cellular mechanisms of nociceptive processing;
- Peripheral and central mechanisms of pain modulation;
- Hormonal regulation of pain sensitivity and chronic pain states;
- Endogenous analgesic and descending modulatory systems;
- Sensory neuron function and transcriptional regulation in pain pathways;
- Trigeminal system mechanisms in orofacial pain and migraine;
- Neuroimmune interactions in inflammatory and neuropathic pain;
- Dorsal root ganglion and spinal cord mechanisms of pain signaling;
- Translational pain research and biomarker discovery;
- Novel therapeutic strategies targeting pain pathways.
This Special Issue aims to provide an interdisciplinary platform for advancing the understanding of pain neurobiology and identifying new therapeutic opportunities for pain-related disorders.
