Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Biomechanics has become an integral discipline in helping young athletes develop and progress in their chosen sporting field, enabling the optimization of performance, injury prevention, and athlete rehabilitation in what is a young and relatively immature skeletal system. Biomechanics now plays a key role in injury prevention, identifying and correcting movement patterns that increase the risk of harm in young athletes. Common injuries, such as sprains, strains, muscle tears, and common injuries, are often the result of inefficient or incorrect movement as children and adolescents learn the correct and most appropriate technique.

Advances in markerless motion capture technology, wearables, imaging technology and motion analysis have allowed coaches, teachers, physical therapists, data scientists, sport scientists and sports clinicians to closely monitor the recovery process of young athletes, adjusting physical activity levels, rehabilitation processes and return to play guidelines while refining protocols according to the specific biomechanical needs. In many sporting disciplines where younger athletes are prone to overuse injuries, biomechanical strategies have enabled the design of more personalized protocols that accelerate recovery without increasing the risk of re-injury.

This Special Issue presents the current advancements relating to the role of biomechanics in innovative strategies in applied sports biomechanics in performance, injury prevention and rehabilitation in adolescent and younger athletes. The aim of this Special Issue is to underscore the importance of biomechanics in designing innovative and adaptive programs that meet the specific demands of each sport and athlete, thereby optimizing the younger athlete’s performance and reducing injury risks. This comprehensive approach not only improves performance but also contributes to effective injury prevention and rehabilitation strategies, making biomechanics an essential field for adolescents and younger athletes.
