Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The rapid evolution of biomedical technology is transforming our approach to diagnosing, treating, and managing diseases. Innovations in extended reality (XR), which encompasses augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR), are opening up new advances in medical applications, enhancing accuracy, accessibility, and personalization in healthcare. These technologies enable immersive simulation, real-time guidance, and enhanced visualization, improving both clinical outcomes and new assistive technology medical devices. XR-based approaches are reshaping various domains, including surgery, rehabilitation, human–robot interaction, biomedicine, and patient education by offering immersive, interactive, and data-driven solutions.
The integration of AR, VR, and XR in medicine has led to significant advancements in surgical planning, real-time navigation, and postoperative recovery. Additionally, these technologies offer new possibilities for treating neurological and psychological disorders, pain management, and physical therapy. As research in XR-driven healthcare solutions continues to grow, it is crucial to explore novel methodologies, applications, and interdisciplinary approaches that can further optimize their impact.
This Special Issue, entitled "Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality and Extended Reality Solutions for Biomedical Applications", invites the submission of original research articles and comprehensive reviews focused on cutting-edge AR, VR, and XR technologies applied in various biomedical contexts. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
- AR/VR/XR techniques for surgical simulation, planning, strategy, and navigation;
- AR/VR/XR applications in rehabilitation and physical therapy;
- AR/VR/XR integration with robotic-assisted surgery;
- AR/VR/XR applications in the treatment of neurological and psychological disorders;
- AR/VR/XR applications in pain management and therapy;
- AI-driven AR/VR/XR solutions for personalized healthcare.
This Special Issue of Bioengineering aims to highlight recent advancements in AR, VR, and XR applications within biomedical fields, spanning fundamental scientific discoveries, technological innovations, and novel clinical applications. We encourage contributions that explore interdisciplinary research and the latest developments in this rapidly evolving domain.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Bioengineering is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
