Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) are rapidly transforming clinical practice across biomedical disciplines, and the fields of audiology and phoniatrics are no exception. From automated audiological diagnosis and neonatal hearing screening to AI-assisted assessment of voice disorders, dysphagia, and laryngeal pathology, intelligent computational methods hold extraordinary promise for improving diagnostic accuracy, enhancing patient outcomes, and extending specialist care to underserved populations through telemedicine.

This Special Issue, titled "Artificial Intelligence in Audiology, Hearing Rehabilitation and Phoniatrics: Emerging Methods and Clinical Applications," aims to gather original research articles, systematic reviews, and clinical studies addressing the integration of AI and machine learning into audiological and phoniatric practice. We welcome contributions spanning the full clinical spectrum: from hearing science and cochlear implant outcomes to voice, swallowing, including their intersection with aging and cognitive decline.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Machine learning approaches for audiological diagnosis
  • AI-driven neonatal hearing screening programs
  • Machine learning in the diagnosis of voice disorders
  • Artificial intelligence for hearing loss and cognitive decline risk in the elderly
  • AI-based assessment of dysphagia and swallowing function
  • Prognostic scoring models for cochlear implant outcomes from an audiological/rehabilitative perspective
  • AI-assisted laryngostroboscopy and laryngeal imaging analysis
  • Telemedicine platforms integrating AI for remote monitoring of otological and phoniatric conditions

The aim is to compile a collection of at least 8 high-quality articles that will contribute to establishing evidence-based frameworks for AI adoption in these specialties. Submissions may report novel algorithms, clinical validation studies, multicenter datasets, or translational findings bridging computational methods and clinical care.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Audiology Research is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
