Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue will publish research demonstrating recent advances and challenges pertinent to AI applications in IoT systems. AI’s integration with the IoT enables collecting, analyzing, and acting on data in real time. In particular, deploying advanced machine learning (ML) algorithms with the vast data collected by IoT devices enables advanced decision-making and automation. An AI application may analyze such data, learn from it, and continuously refine its models. This continuous learning cycle makes the entire system smarter over time. However, AI/ML deployment in the IoT is a challenge in open research due to several concerns, including the resource limitations of IoT devices and security considerations.

Leveraging AI for data analysis, monitoring, and modelling in IoT systems is difficult due to not only the limitations of IoT storage, processing power, and energy but also the real-time requirements in most intelligent IoT applications. Thus, novel solutions are being studied to efficiently manage data and support intelligent tasks in IoT systems. Moreover, there are new security challenges in protecting data, involving machine learning complexities and limited resources for supporting data encryption.

Accordingly, this Special Issue welcomes submissions focusing on artificial intelligence applications in IoT, including, but not limited to, the following topics:

  • AI/ML applications in IoT data analysis;
  • The application of deep learning in the IoT;
  • Machine learning in industrial IoT applications;
  • Edge learning in the IoT;
  • Deploying generative AI in IoT applications;
  • Security challenges of AI-empowered IoT applications;
  • Trustworthy AI for IoT applications;
  • Prototype designs for AI applications in the IoT;
  • AI applications in the IoT for the automotive and transportation industries, advanced manufacturing, smart cities, and healthcare;
  • Climate change and its relation to AI applications in the IoT;
  • Digital transformation and its relation to AI applications in the IoT.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
