Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Due to their unique characteristics, atmospheric pressure plasma discharges are now being used in new applications in the medical field, including plasma–wound interaction, dentistry, surgical equipment sterilization, cosmetic surgery, rapid blood coagulation, and skin surface decontamination. A comprehensive survey of plasma applications and an understanding of the physics behind plasma’s interaction with wounds, skin cells, and surfaces is required to further expand this field to reach other frontiers. The commercial aspect of plasma medical applications needs to be explored to enable new investments in novel applications.

The aim of this Special Issue is to gather current information regarding both technical and commercial aspects of plasma applications in medicine. These applications include plasma–wound interaction chemistry, plasma–water interaction, plasma–cell interaction, viral and bacterial mitigation, and surface decontamination with multiple commercial applications. Recent activities show that hospital floors serve as a potential source of nosocomial pathogen transmission, and new studies are now being conducted to enable the effective disinfection of contaminated surfaces. In order to decontaminate the floors and replace harmful chemical-based detergents, unique plasma-based sweep techniques are essential.

Non-equilibrium, low temperature atmospheric discharges require special plasma torches that have evolved in terms of their design. This call for papers will provide a comprehensive survey of plasma torch designs and assess their ability to control plasma parameters in a controlled fashion. To achieve this goal, it is necessary to have a detailed study of plasma characteristics and the measurement of oxygen and nitrogen reactive species and their impacts on wound surfaces.

Plasma experts are encouraged to submit their papers to cover multiple novel plasma applications in medicine and related fields.
