Emerging Renewable-Based Electricity Grids: Integration, Management and Smart Technologies
This special issue belongs to the section “Energy Science and Technology“.
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The global energy transition toward renewable sources is fundamentally transforming electrical power systems. Modern electricity grids are evolving into complex, distributed networks integrating variable renewable energy sources such as photovoltaic systems, wind farms, and energy storage technologies. This transformation presents significant technical, regulatory, and operational challenges that require innovative solutions in grid management, power quality control, and system integration.
We are pleased to invite you to contribute to this Special Issue focused on emerging technologies and methodologies for renewable-based electricity grids. The integration of distributed generation, energy storage systems, and smart grid technologies demands new approaches to system design, protection schemes, and energy management strategies. Furthermore, the increasing penetration of renewable sources requires advanced forecasting methods, grid stability analysis, and innovative solutions for power quality enhancement.
This Special Issue aims to provide a comprehensive platform on which researchers, engineers, and practitioners may share recent advances in renewable-based electrical systems. The topics covered align with Applied Sciences’s multidisciplinary scope, encompassing electrical engineering, energy systems, control technologies, and digital innovation in power systems. We seek contributions that address both theoretical developments and practical implementations, fostering the transition toward sustainable and resilient electricity grids.
In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following:
- Integration of photovoltaic and wind energy systems into electricity grids;
- Energy storage technologies and their grid integration;
- Smart grid technologies and advanced metering infrastructure;
- Microgrid design, control, and energy management;
- Power quality issues in renewable-based grids;
- Grid stability and voltage regulation with high renewable penetration;
- Demand response and load management strategies;
- Digital twins and Building Information Modeling (BIM) for electrical systems;
- Predictive maintenance and condition monitoring of electrical assets;
- Renewable energy communities and distributed generation management;
- Electric vehicle integration and vehicle-to-grid technologies;
- Advanced protection schemes for renewable-dominated grids;
- Energy forecasting methods for variable renewable sources;
- Regulatory frameworks and technical standards for grid modernization.
We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
